New Volunteer Opportunities!

Firstly, for the locals, we can volunteer at the Earthworks Garden in Detroit, from 9 am – 12 pm on September 25th.  The volunteer director there isn’t counting on us to fill all the spots, but they could use a maximum of 12 volunteers.

Here’s a link to the Earthworks volunteer page.

Our second opportunity calls on our knitting and crocheting friends!  Warm Up America volunteers can donate their time to crochet and knit a 7″ x 9″ rectangle (or more). Sections are either joined by individuals or groups in a community and donated locally or sent to Foundation headquarters for joining and distribution.

I’d like to encourage some of our long-distance commune supporters to get in on this, if they can crochet or knit.  If YOU can’t, can you ask someone you know to make a rectangle for you?

I’d love it if we could get enough squares to make an afghan or two which we could then donate locally.  I see a lot of red & white yarn being employed here. 🙂

Thanks everyone, and Let’s Go Red Wings!

Gleaners Wrap Up

On August 10th the Red Wings Commune gathered for its first ever volunteer opportunity. Since so many of us met at H2H where we had a great time for a good cause, volunteering and helping in the Detroit area seemed a natural extension of our friendship. We converged on Gleaners Food Bank in Detroit, to work a 3 hour shift in the warehouse.

6 Volunteers came together to collect 6 orders for various soup kitchens and charitable organizations in the area.

We moved 275 pieces of stock.

2,992 lbs of food and necessities.

Nearly 3,000 meals.

A huge thanks to Gleaners for being so accomodating (snacks and bottled water were provided), patient and instructive. And the regular warehouse workers were fun and friendly.

Working in the warehouse was a great experience. The amount of food that Gleaners has to distribute to those in need is staggering, and seeing that first hand was incredible. Being able to give some of our time to help them out was well worth it and inspiring.

We’ll probably be back to work there again in the future.

Check back here for more details on our next volunteer opportunity, which will take place on a weekend in September. Just not training camp weekend, since many of us will be in Traverse City to watch our boys convene for the start of the 2010-2011n regular season.

Thanks everyone and LET’S GO RED WINGS!!
